Café Twenty One
North East chef and restaurateur Terry Laybourne retains an infectious passion for food, wine and hospitality.
After several decades of working in the sector and establishing his reputation as one of the top regional chefs in the UK he has lost none of his zeal and is always looking at new and creative ways to present food and drink to an inquisitive public.
This year he is celebrating the 21st anniversary of his successful restaurant business, 21 Hospitality Group, which comprises Café 21, Café 21 at Fenwick, and Caffe Vivo, all in Newcastle along with Bistro 21 in Durham.
His contribution to food and authentic, simple cooking is widely recognised by his peers, industry critics, and customers alike. Only last year, he picked up several more awards including a Taste of North East England Gold Award and a ?lifetime? achievement award at the Northern Hospitality Awards.
Terry and his flagship restaurant, Café 21, have picked up many other accolades over the years, including Decanter magazine, Restaurant of the Year; Perrier, Northern Restaurant of the Year; an Egon Ronay Star; and perhaps, the most prestigious of all, gaining a Michelin Star in 1992.
Terry's belief that "good cooking is about good shopping" means he has strong partnerships with his suppliers, whether that?s food or wine. This focus on good quality, regional produce and attention to detail are key to his continued success.
